Who would have thought that there would be African animals in the middle of Tropical North Queensland? Well, there are now at the recently opened Cairns Wildlife Park.
The Cairns Wildlife Park is a 40-minute drive from Cairns City, just past Kuranda going up on the Kuranda Range Rd. At this height above sea level, the land is dry and grassy with termite mounds aplenty - just as you would find in the savannah grasslands of Africa.
The park houses many exotic animals in enormous fenced enclosures. The animals to be seen include lions, tigers, cheetahs, a white rhinoceros, ostriches, several species of monkeys, bears, lemurs, antelopes and more. Two deep lakes house different species of hippopotamuses.
Our tip is to arrive early and bring the family. Reason being that most of the animal feedings take place in the morning and the animals are much more active during this time of day. The feeding sessions themselves are immensely entertaining, with a chance for the public to see animals up close and interact with the animal handlers. The zookeepers are very friendly and are happy to spend time answering children's questions.
Whilst at the monkey enclosures, look out for the notorious toad-licking Japanese Macaque. He is easily spotted as he usually carries a cane toad around in one hand! For those who don't know, cane toads have a toxin in their skins, which produces a chemically-induced high if ingested. This particular naughty monkey must have figured this out and now has an addiction to cane toads. Despite the zookeepers efforts to prevent any toads getting into his enclosure, unfortunately he still manages to catch himself a toad once every few days.
The Cairns Wildlife Park is a great place to spend half a day with the children. The exotic animals are easy to spot yet able to roam around freely in their vast enclosures. The park itself is very well-maintained and is a lovely peaceful place to be. Arrive early so as not to miss the amazing feeding sessions.
